The Oriel Gallery is delighted to announce its participation in this year’s Baggotonia Festival, Dublin’s celebration of art, literature, and the creative spirit of the city’s historic south side. On Thursday, 18th September 2025, The Oriel will host a special exhibition of acclaimed painter Gerard Byrne, honoured as the Festival’s Artist of the Year.

Gerard Byrne, widely regarded as one of Ireland’s foremost contemporary artists, has long been associated with Baggotonia—the storied neighbourhood of poets, painters, and free thinkers that inspired generations of creative endeavour. His evocative paintings capture the light, atmosphere, and hidden poetry of Dublin’s Georgian streets and leafy canals.  This exhibition will bring together a selection of Byrne’s recent and iconic works, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the visual language that has made him a defining voice in Irish art.

About The Oriel Gallery

Founded in 1968, The Oriel Gallery is Ireland’s longest established independent gallery specialising in Irish art. For nearly six decades, The Oriel has championed some of the country’s most celebrated painters, supporting the careers of Jack B. Yeats, Paul Henry, and countless others who have shaped Ireland’s artistic heritage. The gallery continues to serve as a vital platform for Irish artists, both established and emerging, affirming its commitment to excellence, scholarship, and cultural enrichment.

Speaking ahead of the event, Mandy Williams, Managing Director for The Oriel said:

“We are honoured to present Gerard Byrne as Artist of the Festival 2025. His work embodies the essence of Baggotonia—its lyricism, curiosity, and sense of place. This exhibition is a celebration not only of Gerard’s remarkable talent but also of the living artistic tradition that makes Dublin such an extraordinary city.”
